A fun and festive Black and Orange Halloween Cake that combines rich flavors with vibrant colors, perfect for any Halloween celebration.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for the black layer)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (you can substitute with regular milk)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup orange food coloring (for the orange layer)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder (optional, if making black frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons milk (to achieve desired consistency)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans (9-inch).
  2. Mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Combine the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract in another bowl. Stir until fully combined.
  4. Combine the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing gently until just blended.
  5. Divide the batter into two bowls. Leave one half plain for the black layer and mix orange food coloring into the other bowl.
  6. Pour half of the black batter into one prepared pan and half of the orange batter into the other.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool for 10 minutes in the pans.
  8. Prepare the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy, then adding powdered sugar and cocoa powder (if desired), alternating with milk.
  9. Assemble the cooled cakes by layering them with frosting between and on top.
  10. Decorate with Halloween-themed sprinkles or any festive decorations you like.

Notes

For a smoother finish, use a bench scraper to smooth the edges of the frosting. Ensure cakes cool completely before frosting.
