Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2-3 tablespoons cold water
1/2 cup fruit jam or filling of choice (e.g., strawberry or blueberry)
1 egg (for egg wash)
Powdered sugar (for icing, optional)
Food coloring (for decoration, optional)
Instructions
Prepare the dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Form the dough: Gradually add cold water, a tablespoon at a time, until a dough forms. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to firm up.
Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Roll out the dough: On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut it into coffin shapes using a knife or a cookie cutter.
Add the filling: Place a tablespoon of fruit jam in the center of half of the shapes, ensuring you leave a little space around the edges.
Seal the pop tarts: Top the jam-filled shapes with the remaining dough shapes, sealing the edges with a fork to prevent the filling from leaking during baking.
Prepare for baking: Brush the tops of the pop tarts with the egg wash for a golden finish.
Bake: Place the pop tarts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Cool and decorate: Allow the pop tarts to cool slightly before decorating with powdered sugar icing and food coloring if desired.
Notes
Use cold ingredients for a flaky texture. Don’t overwork the dough and ensure edges are sealed properly.
