A delightful and creative way to celebrate Halloween with impressive fondant cakes that allow for limitless decoration and flavor options.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (16 oz) package of white fondant
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then add the buttermilk and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  4. Whisk together the flour and baking powder in another bowl. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Knead the fondant on a clean surface until soft and pliable. Add gel food coloring if desired.
  8. Level the tops of the cooled cakes with a serrated knife if necessary. Place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting. Add the second layer on top.
  9. Brush a thin layer of vegetable shortening over the cake. Roll out the fondant to about 1/4 inch thick and drape over the cake.
  10. Smooth the surface with your hands or a fondant smoother.
  11. Use additional fondant or edible decorations to create Halloween-themed designs.

Notes

Ensure to let the cakes cool completely before applying the fondant to prevent it from melting.
